Learn More about Dinosaur Provincial Park

Dinosaur Provincial Park is located in Alberta, Canada. Inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979, it contains the largest number of dinosaur remains ever found. There are no less than 35 species of dinosaurs dating back 75 million years. The site is exceptional because of the number and variety of remains found, which represent all known groups of Cretaceous dinosaurs. The park covers 7,825 hectares and encompasses mostly badlands and riparian lands. It remains very well preserved from human activity. Melting glaciers have carved out the badlands and left hills of dinosaur bones. About 300 skeletons have been found, two of which are displayed in the park where they were discovered. If you follow the Dinosaur Trail along the Red Deer River, you'll find the Royal Tyrell Museum of Paleontology, which houses over 80,000 specimens, including 50 complete dinosaur skeletons. You can also put yourself in the shoes of an archaeologist at the Tyrell Museum's Experimental Station. This station offers visitors an introduction to archaeological digs. There are five routes through the park: Badlands (1.3 km), Cottonwoods Flat (1.4 km), Coulee Viewpoint (0.9 km), Prairie (0.3 km) and Trail of the Fossil Hunters (0.9 km). You can follow them on your own or hire a guide. Several interpretive trails are offered depending on the age of the participants. Finally, if you wish to stay several days in the park, you should know that three campsites are installed on the site.
